Create, work, endure, think, ask, escape, overcome, change, meditate, be. These verbs, like the selection of works, represent a variety of actions that, taken together, describe a broad spectrum of human experience—from effort and reflection to personal growth.
1mposter uses ASCII code as a medium to create synthetic and evocative animations. The looping sequences immerse us and captivate our attention with actions that, as in life itself, are constantly repeated. ASCII art (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is an artistic practice that uses characters from the ASCII code (letters, numbers, symbols) to create images.
The earliest practices originated with the use of typewriters, which were used to create analog images. With the arrival of the first computers in the 1960s and 1970s, the code was developed and these expressions took on a new life. In the 1980s, they became established in bulletin board systems (BBS), and with the advent of Internet access in the 1990s, they began to be used in emoticons, email signatures, video games, and online forums.
This exhibition revisits and expands on that tradition. The animations reconfigure alphanumeric characters to construct spaces, volumes, and temporalities, transforming an originally technical-practical code into a poetic and visual tool.
Through these works, text is partially freed from its linguistic function to become a moving image. It is at these intersections —between the retro and the digital, the limited and the expansive, the conceptual and the visual— where 1mposter creates small fragments of our own existence.
1mposter is a Brazilian artist with many years of experience in animation and 3D design, specializing in digital media. His creations often explore themes of science and mythology, two sources of inspiration consistently reflected in his work.
Passionate about creating visuals that invite contemplation, his goal is to immerse viewers in his works, revealing new details with every glance.
To develop these works, he uses the 3D software Houdini, where he has developed a proprietary configuration that allows him to position and control letters with great precision. He constantly seeks to improve his "ASCII solver," a tool that adjusts characters based on the direction of contrasting lines, allowing letters in different parts of an image, such as the interior of a skull or its contours, to automatically adapt to the analysis of surrounding pixels.
1mposter's work explores the human mind, transforming code into a living entity, where bodies act and inhabit digital space.
